I know it’s been a while since our last blog post, but things have been super busy around the farm. I am an educator and getting back into the swing of school took a hot minute. I don’t think it matters if you have 7 animals or 70, it’s still a lot of work! Last week we had our Icelandic sheep sheared for the first time. It was an amazing thing to watch. I was a little nervous to be honest with you since our Stella June and Vinnie Paul are still lambs at 5 months old. But they did an amazing job! And now our lambs are naked! I’ve shipped the wool off to be processed and I think Blake and I may take a field trip to the mill to find out exactly how the processing the wool works. I can’t wait to get back the yarn and make something exceptional for us to cherish and keep.
The pigs are growing up so fast now it seems. I was just looking at pictures and videos from when we first got them and they seem gigantic compared to that day. We are hoping to start breeding Piper and Josie when they are a little over a year old, which will be next Spring, but we will wait and see how mama (me) feels about it. I still look at them as being babies themselves. I know when we have little piglets being born, I’m going to want to keep all of them. Red is still Red… he’s a handful but still my little love bug and he’s even given me inspiration for another children’s book. Stay tuned…
Blake has planted a winter food plot for the sheep and the pigs so hopefully that will be a success for the animals over the cold, winter months. Although it’s still 90 degrees here in Georgia the first week of October, so who knows what the winter will look like. I hope it’s not a brutal as last year with the 12 plus inches of snow and the ice storm.
Our sweet Izzy girl will be having surgery next week on her ACL. She tore it in May 2017 and had surgery, but her body seems to be rejecting the hardware. Please send happy doggy thoughts her way that this surgery is successful and she heals as quickly as she did from the first surgery. And our other dog, Jax doesn’t know what to do without Izzy being here, so he will need extra love and attention in the coming weeks. I think when it comes to these farm animals, dogs included; I get more upset about things like this than they do.
So, I guess for now, we are just preparing for cooler weather on the farm and looking forward to more adventures to come!
