Wow… where do I begin? There’s so much to tell you about Elizabeth Acres! Blake and I live on some of the property my great grandparents owned. A year before I met Blake, I purchased their old farmhouse and remodeled it. The entire time I was renovating the old farm house, my mother kept telling me, “You only have one closet.” I didn’t think that mattered because it was just me and my two cats. Two months after I moved in, I met Blake. And the rest is history as they say, with only one closet. But speaking of history, let me give you a little backstory on our old farmhouse.
The house was built in 1938 by my great grandparents. The wood used in the house was cut from timber off of the property. My great grandparents took the timber to the local saw mill in Tallapoosa. I don’t think there were any house plans, nor any drawings. I know for sure nothing in this house is level, but that’s character in my opinion. That’s not what Blake calls it ☺ The house was sparsely furnished as my family was very poor. I will share more about the home’s furnishings in my later blogs.
Elizabeth, “Lizzie”, was my great grandmother and she was a preacher’s wife. She and my great grandfather were farmers and they had 8 children. My great grandfather lived until I was 11 years old.
Love is in this old house. Love from the past, love of the past, love for the future and love for what this old farmhouse represents: a simple, holistic, honest life.
So where did the name Elizabeth Acres come from? As you read above, my great grandmother was Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bates. My mother, Parrie Elizabeth Murphy, was named after her and I, in turn, am named after both of these amazing ladies. So, it was only fitting, that my husband and I name our farm Elizabeth Acres. I hope you will join us on this journey we call life: Simple. Holistic. Honest.
